Overview: Music Therapy

The music intervention in overcoming both physical and mental trauma has been proven since the end of World War I and II, through the researches on the patients who could miraculously gain recovery from the melodies of music played by the musicians to help the victims at the veteran hospital. The music therapy profession emerged through the confessions from doctors and nurses who saw the physical and emotional responses from their patients through music intervention. Other thing that had been identified was the need of special training for music therapist prior to the music therapy practice.

The music therapy is a clinical use of music and is proven as the non-verbal intervention to attain specific ends by the qualified music therapist. The objective of this music therapy is varied and could be related to the development of emotional, social, communications, cognitive, and physical ability. Albeit the music therapy is not intended for clients to gain musical ability, the musical ability could perhaps emerge along with the on-going therapy.

Based on World Federation of Music Therapy (WFMT) 2011,

“Music therapy is the professional use of music and its elements as an intervention in medical, educational, and everyday environments with individuals, groups, families, or communities who seek to optimize their quality of life and improve their physical, social, communicative, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual health and wellbeing. Research, practice, education, and clinical training in music therapy are based on professional standards according to cultural, social, and political contexts.”

In the session of music therapy, the therapist and client normally play improvised music. To improvise, the client is not expected to own the musical backgrounds at all. Based on the interaction in the clinical improvisation, the openness and trust of client toward the therapist will be evoked. This process, moreover, would support the journey of a therapy and later on will be the client?s transformational point.

Musical therapy aims everyone, whether adults or kids. The musical therapy is practiced in hospital, asylum, hospice, child development clinic, schools for mentally retarded kids, even in houses. Although the word ?therapy? sometimes is associated with the physical recovery or is only prevailed to the special needs? ones, the use of musical therapy in the developed countries such as United States of America, England, and Australia is increasingly more common among normal kids and adults, for instance in the normal schools. The musical therapy session also could be done both individually and in group.

In Indonesia, the music therapy is still not widely found. However, several institutions that have been offering music therapy service are hospitals, schools for mentally retarded, music schools, and freelance practice. The clients are usually kids with special needs (Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome, Autism, ADHD, and cancer patients.
