That is what Ir. Soekarno, the first president of Indonesia, said while he was alive and fought for Indonesia?s freedom and welfare. In the spirit of Sumpah Pemuda, UPH Faculty of Law Student Body held a talk show themed Soekarno?s quote at UPH on Friday, October 28, 2011.

The talk show invited speakers Dr. Drs. Thomas Tokan Pureklolon, MPh., MM., M.Si. (UPH Faculty of Liberal Arts Lecturer), Amelia Ahmad Yani (daughter of Letnan Jendral TNI AD Ahmad Yani), Riri Pandjaitan, and Catherin Pandjaitan (daughter of Mayjen Anumerta D.I. Pandjaitan) with moderator Imam Priyono, TVRI presenter.

?Commemorating Sumpah Pemuda day, the event was held to encourage the youth nationalism spirit, especially at UPH,? mentioned Steven Yosef, head of the event committee, describing the background of event. Besides UPH students, the event attended by approximately 200 participants also invited students from 11 universities in Jabodetabek area.

Thomas explained that instability among the Indonesian youth shake their nationalism. ?Nationalism is actually coming from a modern concept that Soekarno took. However, it is applied in Indonesia with local cultures,? explained him about nationalism. ?The instability of national identity is first coming from local regulations. Each province has their own matrix but the regulations remain the same,? he added. The instability can be overcome if the youth gather and discuss. Therefore, it is important that the youth has the spirir of Sumpah Pemuda and a clear national identity.

Riri Pandjaitan and Catherine Pandjaitan, besides telling the story of their father?s life, told the youth to always remember God. ?Someone is able to move forward if one has the right character and know his creator,? Riri told. Catherine also added with her father?s word when he was alive, ?Ora et Labora: pray and work. If you have the knowledge but do not have a good morality then it will be useless.?

Amelia Ahmad Yani then inspired the participants with her father, Ahmad Yani?s brave story. She also told the youth that live in a different era now, ?do not degrade your leader. Respect the elder, whoever that is,? she told.

The event was ended with revowing the Sumpah Pemuda and the vow signing done by speakers and guests.(dee)
