Overview

The Secondary English major at the International Teachers College prepares students to work in middle school or high school classrooms by providing them instruction in two major areas: teaching English as a second language and literature interpretation and composition. As students enter the major in their sophomore year, they will learn about language acquisition and major literary forms, such as fiction and drama, and develop skills of literary criticism. The next set of courses delve into the pedagogical aspects of teaching the English language and various forms of literature. In their senior year, students will find themselves working on the applications of the instruction they have received thus far. Students will create suitable assessments for their second language English students and abstract the cultural ideals from literature that tie cultures together. English majors will internalize the central concepts and develop skills necessary for teaching the English language and literary forms from a reformed perspective.
