Industrial Engineering UPH took part in Program Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) Dissemination

Pelita Harapan University (UPH) became one of the higher education institutions taking part in the promotion of research activities and the application of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) in Indonesia

 A literature review indicates that the research and application of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), as one of the basic measurement of sustainability (sustainability metrics), in Indonesia is still in the early stages of development, but began to show signs of improvement in the last 5 years. Pelita Harapan University (UPH) became one of the higher education institutions taking part in the promotion of research activities and the application of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) in Indonesia. One contribution of UPH through LCA research and dissemination of research results, teaching in subjects LCA Life Cycle Engineering, as well as active in seminars and workshops LCA in the campus environment and society and industry conducted by lecturers of Industrial Engineering, Dr. Jessica Hanafi.

 

Jessica Hanafi is a Doctorate in Life Cycle Engineering from the University of New South Wales (UNSW) Australia, and has specialized in the field of reverse logistics, life cycle engineering, sustainable manufacturing, supply chain and sustainable practices. In addition to teaching at UPH Industrial Engineering Department, Dr. Jessica is also a reviewer for various research, conservation and journals related to his field of expertise. Currently Dr. Jessica is active in the association ILCAN (Indonesian Life Cycle Assessment Network) as treasurer and membership coordinator.

 

ILCAN itself is an association, network perpetrators of LCA in Indonesia which was established in December 17th 2014 by several college professors and researchers from research institutes. ILCAN LCA aims to be a network that serves the national level to promote the application of LCA in Indonesia. This is done by sharing relevant information about the activities of LCA and LCA increase the capacity of actors in academia, private, and government by organizing workshops, seminars, and training. 

 

In order to be more systematically identify the perpetrators and various research of LCA in Indonesia, ILCAN in collaboration with several institutions such as the Center for Standardization of Environment and Forestry-KLHK, Research Center for Chemical-LIPI, Pelita Harapan  University and PT Sucofindo for the first time hold a workshop titled ” Life Cycle Assessment studies in universities / research institutions / government / private in Indonesia “. National workshop was held successfully on 24-25 November 2015 at Graha Widya Bakti, Puspiptek, South Tangerang. The speakers are experts in this international workshop including Ir. Noer Adi Wardojo, M.Sc, from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (Indonesia), Dr. C?cile Bessou from CIRAD (France), Prof. Shabbir Gheewala of King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi (Thailand), and Assoc. Prof. Yasuhiro Fukushima of Tohoku University (Japan). There are also 15 other invited speakers presenting a variety of topics LCA. The workshop was a success with more than 100 active participants from academia, government, and the private sector.

 

Through this forum ILCAN hopes to build a network between researchers, academics, practitioners and government as well as providing the media to promote LCA studies in Indonesia and to support sustainable development in Indonesia.
