Two teams with three UPH students from Applied Mathematics Department each got awarded ?Honorable Mention? for their papers in Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM) last February 2011. MCM is an annual online mathematical competition organized by the Consortium for Mathematics and Its Applications (COMAP) that Andre Jonathan Cahyadi, Yohanes, Yoel Martinus Purwanto, and Panji Widiarda Rabowo from batch 2009 with Ferry Vincenttius Ferdinand and Olivia Johanna from batch 2008 surely made the alma mater proud as they passed their first target when they joined the competition. Along with almost 28 hundred teams from 16 countries, they solved the problem given by Dr. Michael Tortorella in five days. In five days, both teams tried to figure out the best answer that could meet the judge?s expectation. The teams were asked to see the ordinary problem in mathematical way. In the first three days, the teams were trying to understand the questions by doing research and finishing the paper in two days. ?We didn?t expect anything when we joined the competition since we were mostly sophomores. So, we actually haven?t mastered some integrated mathematical lessons. To join the competition and be awarded ?Honorable Mention? was very surprising,? said Yohanes, one of the participants. ?We always encourage students to join competition. Win or lose, it doesn?t matter. What matter is the experience they gain. We also realize that probably their capabilities as sophomore haven?t meet the maximum qualifications since they haven?t learned some stuff. However, the students were very excited to join the competition. We salute them for that,? said Head of UPH Mathematics Program Helena Margaretha, Ph.D. (dee) UPH Media Relations |
