UPH and Singapore Polytechnic Join Forces to Host the Youth Model ASEAN Conference 2025.

In today’s workforce, it is crucial to become an individual who is ready to face global challenges. Educational institutions play a crucial role in preparing individuals by providing a deep understanding of global dynamics. To demonstrate its commitment to quality education, Universitas Pelita Harapan (UPH) and Singapore Polytechnic (SP) have taken a significant step in shaping future leaders. They have partnered to organize the Youth Model ASEAN Conference (YMAC) 2025, a platform that will inspire and prepare individuals to become proactive global citizens.

The Youth Model ASEAN Conference (YMAC) simulates high-level meetings of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) for student participants from the five polytechnics in Singapore and tertiary students from other ASEAN member states. First held in 2012 and initially based in Singapore, the conference aims to enhance the younger generation’s understanding of ASEAN, its organizational structure, and how to collaborate with their counterparts within ASEAN to resolve the current issues faced by the member states.

In 2025, YMAC will be held for the first time outside Singapore, specifically in Indonesia, with UPH as the host. The conference will occur virtually on 11 March 2025 and onsite from 18 March to 21 March. UPH, in collaboration with SP, will welcome about 80 ASEAN youth delegates from Institutes of Higher Learning in Indonesia and Singapore for YMAC 2025. Student leaders and staff from both UPH and SP will work hand in hand to organize the event.

This collaboration was formalized on 26 July 2024 through the virtual signing of a Cooperation Letter by Dr. Eric Jobiliong, Vice President of Academics, Research, & Innovation at UPH, and Ms. Georgina Phua, Deputy Principal (Development) at Singapore Polytechnic.

In his speech, Dr Eric Jobiliong highlighted the mutual benefits of this collaboration. He emphasized that YMAC provides a platform for UPH students to become knowledgeable, empathetic, and proactive global citizens who can present solutions to regional and global challenges.

“We hope participants will enhance their critical thinking, diplomacy, and leadership skills. Students will gain valuable insights into ASEAN’s workings, develop public speaking and negotiation skills, and create networking opportunities to aid their future careers. When UPH welcomes YMAC participants in March 2025, I hope they will find UPH a diverse, inspiring, and welcoming place. Let’s work together to build a brighter future for our students and communities,” said Dr Eric Jobiliong.

The collaboration for YMAC 2025 involves several key aspects, including deepening the younger generation’s understanding of ASEAN issues, fostering friendships and networks among ASEAN youth, developing skills such as cultural intelligence, communication, and negotiation, and nurturing potential leaders with a global mindset.

“We are thrilled to announce that UPH’s generous support has made it possible for us to realize our long-held aspiration of hosting YMAC overseas. This partnership is instrumental in creating a dynamic platform that extends our students’ learning beyond Singaporean borders. By immersing them in ASEAN issues through a simulated ASEAN meeting, YMAC 2025 will foster a deep understanding of diverse perspectives and encourage the development of innovative solutions to regional challenges. Ultimately, we aim to actively inspire our youth to shape a brighter future for ASEAN,” said Ms Georgina Phua.

The collaboration between UPH and Singapore Polytechnic in hosting YMAC 2025 is a significant step in preparing the younger generation for global challenges. YMAC is not just a diplomatic simulation but a forum for shaping students into knowledgeable global citizens and building a brighter future for the ASEAN community.

This international event demonstrates UPH’s dedication to ensuring its students are ready to face global dynamics and challenges. With an excellent education, competent lecturers, an extensive network, and various enriching activities, UPH students are prepared to become future leaders who are God-fearing, professional, and able to make a positive impact.
