Open House UPH: Giving High School Students New Experiences through Workshops.

Universitas Pelita Harapan (UPH) always has unique and interesting concepts when it comes to introducing the major available in the campus and the college life. In this year?s Open House UPH, students of SMA Cita Hati Surabaya had the opportunity to participate in workshops held by several programs in UPH. About more than 103 students were participating in various workshops on February 12, 2020. Aside from enriching themselves with knowledge and information, students could also experience the activities and practices done in certain courses.
One of these workshops was held by the Cinematography program. In this workshop, students were involved in film-making preparation and production process. Each student could get a role such as a director, cameraman, and a soundman.
?Through this workshop, we would like students to be familiar with cinematography and also, we want them to have the experience of preparing and producing a film. So, in the beginning we will give them a standard script, and then we divide them into two teams with 10 members each. Every one of them will have the opportunity to be a director, cameraman, soundman, or assistant director,? said Baptista Anton, S.Sn., M. Ikom ? Head of Cinematography Concentration.
The Food Technology program of UPH held a workshop for making boba milk tea, a popular drink among young people, with healthy and nutritious ingredients such as barley flour, carrot, honey, and also corn.
?The purpose of the workshop is to create this popular drink with nutritious and high-protein ingredients. We taught the participants about the principals we learn in Food Technology where in food processing, taste is not the utmost important aspect, because the nutritional value of a food or drink is also very important. For this milk tea, we use jasmine tea to give the tea aroma, and add corn-based milk afterwards. Whereas for the boba, we use barley flour, tapioca flour, and some additives to make it chewy,? said Wenny Silvia Loren Br Sinaga, M.Si., a Food Technology lecturer.
Aside from the two programs, School of Design UPH also held a workshop on repurposing plastic waste. Moreover, the Conservatory of Music UPH also held a workshop to introduce a sound effects creator application to students.
There were many other workshops that students can choose according to their interest, including Hospitality Management, Radio & TV, Pottery, and Business Plan. When the students were done with the workshops, they were invited to a Campus Tour, where they will be introduced to the facilities that UPH provides to assist the learning process of its students.
Following are testimonies from the participants:
Naomi ? 10th grade (SMA Cita Hati Surabaya)
?I was following the workshop held by the Food Technology program because I really like cooking. I really enjoyed the workshop,? said Naomi.
Iskandar Waskito ? Assisting Teacher
?I think this event is really interesting and it has great benefits for the students, especially for those who are about to enter university. With these workshops, students are not only introduced to the majors, but also the activities in that particular major. With this experience, students can have better considerations for the major they may want to take as they pursue higher education in the future,? said Iskandar.
