Music in You UPH: Discovering High School Students? Talent and Interest in Music
Do you like to listen to music? Or maybe, making music? Or maybe both? Alphonse de Lamartine said that music is the literature of the heart because it commences where speech ends. Music is supposed to be learned professionally, however, in reality there has not been many education institutions in Indonesia that has music as its study program. Nevertheless, Universitas Pelita Harapan has shown extra attention about this since 2000 when Conservatory of Music (CoM) was established. UPH?s consistency in music education has been proven from time to time by producing critical and innovative musicians.
In order to introduce music education to High School student, Conservatory of Music UPH, together with the Marketing and Admission Department of UPH, held Music in You, a workshop that was held on April 5, 2019 in the HOPE Building, UPH, Lippo Village.
Music in You is a workshop held for High School students who are interested in learning music. This workshop aims to provide students with the opportunity to learn music through 12 workshop that are available. These workshops were facilitated directly by CoM lecturers and senior students of CoM UPH who have gained numerous experiences.
This workshop, with 150 students participating from 13 different schools from Bandung, Jakarta, and Tangerang, was divided into 2 kinds; Instrument for Classical (Piano, Gitar, Biola, Cello, Flute, Trumpet, Vocal) and Instrument for Jazz and Pop (Piano, Guitar, Bass, Drum, Vocal). Each student could choose one out of these 12 workshops to get brief introduction to music theories and direct practice with CoM lecturers for about two hours.
According to Antonius Sugeng Priyanto, S.Ag., B.C.M., M.Mus., Dean of UPH Conservatory of Music, this introduction is important for students who wants to study music in the future.
?Everything in your life is about art. Art colors the people?s life and anything that gets a touch of art will gain value, a higher one. Imagine, can robot make art? And also imagine the fact that by 2030, there will be 200 million jobs that are replaced by robots, except for artist. Because robots do not have soul, moreover, an artist?s soul. Therefore, if you want to invest in your life, you better study art. Because it will stay relevant for a very long time, and will not be replaced by any robot,? said Antonious eagerly.
Hopefully, through this kind of workshop, these high school students will get inspired and be motivated to keep doing art, especially music. Related to this event, the Conservatory of Music of UPH is trying to show the lecturers? commitment and the music education offered in UPH as a holistic education institution. (pl)
