UPH Industrial Engineering Exhibits the Students? Work of Service & Product Design.

As a matter of fact, industrial world doesn?t only talk about factories and manufactures. The scope is so wide, even up to the service management. In this case, Industrial Engineering has a role to operate companies and fix the system in it. Some people who don?t know about this thing might have an assumption that Industrial Engineering is a rigid and boring program.

Study program of Industrial Engineering Pelita Harapan University (UPH) gives a new sight about that assumption. Through the exhibition of Service and Product Design courses by UPH Industrial Engineering students, people can see another side of Industrial Engineering which is fun, where everyone can enjoy. It is reflected from the work of the students; game digital and finished products.

?Exhibition is the way of UPH Industrial Engineering students to introduce their program for public, especially for someone who doesn?t know much about Industrial Engineering,? said Natalia Hartono, the lecturer of both courses.

This exhibition was conducted on Friday, November 16th, 2018 at the lobby of D building UPH. Through Service Design course, the students from cohort 2015 made a game themed industrial automaticity. Industrial automaticity is the utilization of computer system to control the industrial machine that was operated by people before. Through this game, the students also made a service communication design, and managed the service. This aimed the students to understand the exchange and consumption process of service and product in a company?s operation.

At the same time, in Product Design course, the students from cohort 2016 made a product or goods based on the automata mechanism which is a part of Industrial Engineering. Automata is a product or goods that shows automatic movement sequence. Through Product Design course, the students will be able to design products using ergonomics principal to evaluate the product.

There were nine groups that exhibited their own game. The visitor also could play the game at that time. One of the groups made a game titled ?Hotelpedia?. The game concept was about the booking process until the checkout process in a hotel by online. This game was made using Microsoft Office PowerPoint with an interesting display. There were 10 level that will sharpen our logical thinking and ability of remembering in this game. In the end of each level, the theory that has been given during the learning process of Service Design course will be displayed.

?We want to give an illustration about hotel automaticity by online. However, the role of human is still needed as a supervisor and the main controller,? said Ansera Junisia, a member from ?Hotelpedia? game.

Ricky Roy Geofanny, the other member of the group also added that their game was inspired from ?Dumb Ways to Die Original? game and combined it with an observation from Hotel Kapsul in Surabaya. In this game, they applied the service management and service environmental planning.

On the other hand, there were also seven other group who produced a product in Product Design course. The interesting fact is the product was based from wasted items.

?At the first, they must collect consumer voice. From there they must make a product using ?House of Quality? tools with minimal of 50% wasted materials composition. This activity aimed the students to manifest consumer voice into a product with applying Industrial Engineering,? said Natalia.

One of the products in the exhibition was a wooden table named ?Melisa?. Yumeling, a member of the group made ?Melisa? (Meja Lipat Serba Guna) explained about their product.

?We had been looking in our nearest circumstances, mostly when we have a group work in our friends? boarding house, we have to put laptop in our lap because there was no desk. So, we made a desk from lumbers and used hinges, but it is not just an ordinary desk. This desk can be folded, and it is multipurpose, so it fulfils the ergonomics term. We can put laptop with its speaker, handphone, drinks, stationary, and book shelf,? explained Yumeling.

On the contrary, there was also a product named ?Kluis? that was made from a combination of woods and cardboard. In Dutch, ?Kluis? means safety box. ?Kluis? is a simple funding machine for parents who want to teach the concept of saving money to their children.

?The work concept of ?Kluis? is just putting a coin which the materials can bring up an energy to turn on the battery. The battery will turn on the dynamo that will open the pit, so it will bring out a chocolate or a candy that has been put in the machine before. There is the automata principal,? said one of the member of ?Kluis?.

Through this activity, as the lecturer, Natalia hopes that either digital game or finished products can introduce UPH Industrial Engineering to public better.
