Science-Tech Colloquium is a monthly event of UPH Faculty of Science and Technology (FaST) where the lecturers and cross-departments students gather to discuss about scientific topics in a serious but fun way. The colloquium has started since 2011 by the departments in science and technology group. According to Dr. Henri P. Uranus, as coordinator of colloquium, the scientific event is expected to be the media to share information and to learn about each colleague?s research, so that it can result in a scientific research partnership in cross-departments and can nourish the scientific culture in academicians of FaST.
The event that hosted alternately by 6 departments in FaST is open for lecturers, students, and public. The topic discussed is usually the research result of a lecturer. On Friday, September 11, 2015, at Building B UPH, the colloquium once again was hosted, and this time Industrial Engineering Department invited a guest speaker namely Dr. Henry Tan Setiawan, Principal RSDE Microsoft Research. The topic discussed was Machine Learning in daily life and Career as Software Developer in USA. The event was attended by approximately 100 participants, consisted of students and lecturers, and moderated by Dr. Jessica Hanafi, Industrial Engineering lecturer.
On the first session, Dr. Setiawan discussed a lot about machine learning and deep learning, Based on his presentation, machine learning is a science of getting computer to act without being explicitly programmed. It is a shift of paradigm from programming to teaching and an attempt to replicate human brain capabilities. Machine learning must have the ability to recognize patterns, to generalize concepts, to do feature detection and to synthesize the rules. Meanwhile, deep learning refers to a computer must learn deeply, not only memorize, but understand the concept and create value from the data. Then, Dr. Setiawan gave several examples by showing videos and pictures about advanced applications as the result of deep learning such as MNIST, Google Chatbot, Spotify music recommendation, and many others.

Furthermore, Dr. Setiawan briefly shared information about career opportunity in Microsoft on the second session. ?Microsoft is looking for genuine people who enjoy what they are doing and have a big passion in their fields,? he answered a question about the type of person Microsoft is looking for. Meanwhile, about the work ethics in Microsoft, Dr. Setiawan concluded that Microsoft personnel must always up for challenge to solve world?s problem and give impact to many people and bring change and useful innovation. Dr. Setiawan also added that the opportunity to work at Microsoft in USA as intern is also open for Indonesian citizen who has passion and is capable in his/her field.
