Being a doctor is a dream for many people. This profession is considered a noble profession, because they help people who are experiencing health problems. The magnificent figure of a doctor wrapped in a white coat is still appealing for parents and teenagers as a future career.

Therefore, with the upcoming new academic year, UPH Faculty of Medicine organized an interactive talk show entitled ?The 21st Century Doctor? on Wednesday, April 25, 2011 at Auditorium of Faculty of Medicine, UPH Karawaci. This two-hour talk show featured three speakers, Prof. Dr. Dr. dr. Eka J Wahjoepramono SpBS as the Dean of Faculty of Medicine UPH, dr. Anila Paul MBBS, PGCertHSc, PGDip Rehab as the Vice Dean for Student Affairs and Operations, and dr. Melissa Luwia, MHA as the Director of Network, Reach and Development Siloam Hospitals Group.

Eka opened the talk show. He said that being a doctor is not easy. Besides the high cost, students must experience added length of education time. ?The main key to be a good doctor is having a heart to serve,? he said firmly. In addition, ?a doctor is not only smart, but also skillful, patient, knowledgeable, friendly, open minded, and down to earth,? said him again.
Eka also said that having a lot of money is not the right purpose for taking this subject. ?Don?t let money be the driving factor in your decision, as it will not sustain you. There are other careers in which you can make more money without the responsibility and effort it takes to be a physician,? he said. ?If you put patient first, money will come along. But, if you put money first, you will lose both,? he add.
On the other side, Anila said ?we are here to serve, not to be served.? Anila also explained more about Faculty of Medicine programs. The curriculum is designed to produce medical doctors with broad perspective in medical world. To support the professionalism development, UPH Faculty of Medicine collaborates with Siloam Hospital Group (SHG), Community Health Centre (Puskesmas), Affiliate Satellite Hospitals, as well as Mochtar Riady Institute for Nanotechnology Research Centre (MRIN).

Melissa as the representative of Siloam Hospitals said, ?if you?re graduated from UPH Faculty of Medicine, the job opportunities are wide opened for you,? said her. It is because Siloam Hospitals group has now seven hospitals today, Siloam Hospitals Lippo Village, Kebon Jeruk, Surabaya, Jambi, Balikpapan, Cikarang, and Mochtar Riady Comprehensive Cancer Centre (MRCCC) Semanggi. In the next five years, they plan to establish around 20-25 more Siloam Hospitals around Indonesia. Melissa also said that currently there was Rumah Sakit Umum Siloam that was being constructed. ?This hospital will focus on providing healthcare for the low economic class without compromising the service quality. And quality healthcare should also be supported with continuous education and research,? she said. ?This hospital will also be dedicated to UPH medical students? clinical practices,? said her again.

About 80 participants (parents, new UPH medical students, and UPH college students) joined this talkshow. (pty)
