On the second day of UPH XXXIII graduation on the 2nd of June 2018 at UPH Grand Chapel, Dr. (HC) Mochtar Riady passed on a message to the graduates. This second day of graduation is held for students from the Faculty of Medicine, MMRS, Informatics, Information System, Psychology, Architecture, Visual Communication Design, Interior Design, Faculty of Nursing, and Conservatory of Music.

To fulfill responsibilities is the main message he conveyed to the graduates. He reminded the graduates that along with the degree they deserve comes responsibility.

?If we want status but don?t think about our responsibility, we will become useless. You have to think about how to be responsible in your roles. We have to have the ability to bring Indonesia towards becoming a better nation. The most important thing is you now have your Bachelor?s degrees, and along with that status, there has to be responsible,? he stated.

Dr. (HC) Mochtar talked about the development of human?s lives through the ages to show how change can occur at a really fast pace. A conventional way of life is then followed by various inventions that have changed the way humans live ? from electrical energy to electronic micropower. All this is delivered so that UPH graduates can look forward to fulfilling their roles in the real world.

?Products of life cycle change rapidly. This means we have no choice but to constantly work towards improvement,? he stated.

He mentioned Alibaba, a company that made a digital market to be able to reach all members of the community regardless of class through its services. He also emphasized that digital technology has to be able to reach villages. Otherwise, digital technology will not benefit the community.

He also mentioned poverty as a problem in Indonesia. ?There are a lot of factors that cause poverty, but one of the most important ones is commerce. When a farmer wants to sell his crops, there needs to be a lot of people involved to help deliver them to the market. Also, when he needs to buy goods, there need to be as many people to deliver the goods to his hand, therefore, making cheap goods become expensive. This is how poverty among farmers happens. This is why it is important for the digital market to reach villages. Without the digital technology, the costs spent will be high and prices will be expensive, which will put citizens at a disadvantage,? Dr. (HC) Mochtar explained.

To the graduates of UPH Faculty of Medicine, he reminded them to master the knowledge they have gotten and how to use it to help people.

?I am the least lucky child ever. I was born in Batu and raised in Malang. When I was 7 months old, my grandfather died. When I was 7, my grandmother died. At 9, my mother passed away, and then, two years later, three of my younger siblings died just because there were no hospitals or doctors in Batu. The Faculty of Medicine should reach remote areas and think about those people,? he continued.

The message delivered by Dr. (HC) Mochtar is an extremely important moral message that UPH graduates have to understand their responsibility and role as Indonesian citizens and treat other humans how they are supposed to be treated. (dl/rh)
