The possibility of high school students (SMA) to still not quite understand the majors they will choose and job opportunities in accordance with the chosen majors made Business School UPH held an Accounting Challenge Competition in 2015. This event targets high school students who are interested in continuing education in the field of business.
A total of approximately 60 students attend the seminar entitled “The Future of Accounting Education” held Business School UPH on Friday, November 30th, 2015 at D 503. This event is part of a series program of Accounting Challenge Competition 2015. This seminar brings Dr. Paul James Myers, Deputy Head, School of Accounting (Learning and Teacher) RMIT University in Australia, to explain the accounting world and what can be done as an accountant in the future.
According to Paul Myers, in the present, accountant profession does not only do financial control and reporting or to provide information related to the sustainability of the organization, but they must also be able to relate to clients, analyze and provide advice business. “Accountants of today differ from a few years ago. Currently, accountant should be able to do the planning, analysis, and interpretation which help people to make decisions. He also must be able to ensure that their organizations comply with the relevant regulations stipulated in the country’s tax. Lastly, an accountant also needs to provide a reliable expert opinion, “said Myers.
Related to competition in the free market era, Myers recalled the importance of a qualified professional accountant not only competence in the field, but also independent, honest, and act in accordance with good ethics in business ethics and ethics in general.
Associated with these qualifications, there are three things that need to be studied by a professional accountant according to Myers. First, Technical Skills which accountants should understand well: what is accounting, finance, management, and other knowledge. But today we need to realize that a professional accountant does not only learn things related to accounting but also must learn new technological developments. Second, Professional Skills, Professional accountants should be well-organized, able to collect a variety of information, make a timeline, give an appropriate response to the client, always learning and discipline. Third, Professional Value and Ethic that an accountant should always pay attention to ethics and values that apply, and also always learn constantly to support in becoming a professional accountant
At the end of the seminar which was attended by students and teachers of this school, Grace Salim also announced the next Business School program, namely Business Debate and Entrepreneurship Marketing Plan that is open to high school students in January 2016. (MT/Mf)
