Internet Research Seminar

The role of internet in education field is getting more crucial. Educators or teachers could utilize information from internet that is authoritative, accurate, objective, and up-to-date to support education including research. To utilize the wide range of information from internet, information literacy skill is needed so that the information could be used effectively.

The Johannes Oentoro Library of UPH held a seminar entitled ?Internet Research? for teachers. The seminar purpose is to explain how to use Internet for an effective research and the skill for internet browsing. Some topics that are discussed in this seminar are various digital information sources, Various index for online information browsing, and Boolean connector usage. 

The seminar is presented by Dhama Gustiar Baskoro, SIP, M.Pd ? a librarian that is also active as speaker for local, national, and even international seminar and literacy workshop. For this seminar, the speaker gave some practical tips for an effective internet browsing to the participants, some of tips are:

1. When searching, construct the keywords using synonymous and related terminologies.
2. Identify various indexes for information browsing beside search engine (Google) that could be utilized as alternatives, such as Meta search engine, directory, host, semantic search engine, and deep web search engine.
3. Utilize various Google features such as the conversion, definition, and others that could be useful for researchers.
4. Use the Boolean connectors (AND, OR, and NOT) to make the search more specific
5. Use syntaxes to make a specific search when using Google
6. Last is to give a practical direction on how to select which website valid to be used and not valid to be used and to explain website writing method as quote and bibliography
