Earthquake Resistant Building Competition (ERBC) 2012

“This is the first competition inIndonesia,” said Wiryanto Dewobroto, one of the judges. The competition itself was the third one held by UPH, the previous two were for bridge construction while this one was for building construction.

Earthquake Resistant Building Competition (ERBC) was one of the programs of Civil Engineering Week 2012. For the first time, the competition was themed Building ERBC. “This is the first competition inIndonesia,” said Wiryanto Dewobroto, one of the judges. The competition itself was the third one held by UPH, the previous two were for bridge construction while this one was for building construction. This related to Indonesia’s building that was earthquake prone.

According to Wiryanto, the aim of the competition was to give understanding on how an earthquake resistant building works. “Inside the claas, they only learn the theory. To undestand further they need to practice. In this competition, the students learn how to make assumptions, plan, choose a model, and make construction. This is how the learning process is done,” he said.

UPH civil engineering studies in general not only guided the students to master the theory but also the actual practice. Therefore, we are focused on research and innovation. In all competitions, students created innovations. While the research is done through practicum and experimental data. “Here, students are motivated to innovate,” told Wiryanto who is a lecturer in civil engineering UPH.

“I really appreciate all students who join the competition. There is always progress in curiosity. Through this competition, students can set their benchmark and interact with each other, share information, as well support each other,” he explained.

For this competition, the UPH committee used shaking table as prober that was designed specifically by UPH students. The standard refered to the one used in similar competition in Taiwan. “Although this table is quite simple, but it is adequate and needs to be appreciated,” told Wiryanto.

The competition was participated by10 universities, such as Trisakti, Untar, Atmajaya Jogyakarta, Untag, Universitas Negri Semarang, Universitas Muhammadiyah Jakarta, Universitas Maranatha, UBINUS, Universitas Pembangunan Jaya, STT PLN and Universitas Mercu Buana (UMB).

The first winner came from Universitas Negri Semarang, the second winner was from UBINUS, the third winner was from UMB, the fourth winner was from Universitas Muhammadiyah Jakarta, while the fifth and the sixth winner was from UBINUS. (rh)
