Architecture Is Not Just An ?Articulation Of Space?, But It Is also A ?Place Making? Operation

An architect should look beyond that architecture is not just an ?articulation of space?, but it is also a ?place making? operation. Architecture has limitation, because eventually it conveys its messages to the users and observers through practical things, such as line, point elements, column, and roof. Meaning later comes from these practical things when it preceived by the users. Therefore an architect should look beyond that architecture is not just an ?articulation of space?, but it is also a ?place making? operation.

‘Place’ Exhibition will be held on the first week

Place is a point in space that defined from the presence of the man who performs activities. Architects, through their sensitivity, recite the layer of texts from the space as a potential presence of a place, and empower the materials to reveal, articulate, and compose the layer of texts to be a place.

?Place? exhibition will exhibit architectural works from 5 different studios to show how simple or complex it is for the layer of texts to be legible so it could affect the existing architecture. There are many things that affect architecture, such as memory or love of a place, climate or geographic condition, and social strata.

Making is about embodying something in our mind to be real into senses. Medium is needed in bridging over something in our mind to the senses world. It is scale model.

?Making? exhibition will exhibit architectural works from 3 different studios to show 2 roles of a model. Those are as a media between mind and the world, and as an indicator to know a wide range of opportunities that have not been thought before. Scale model demonstrates how far the students? idea and understanding in using analog and digital method, understanding materials and constructions, form and function. These 3 different studios show the unity of chronology in thinking to make.

‘Making’ Exhibition will be held on the second week

?place.MAKING? is a process that rellies on the sensitivity about something abstract and concrete, and also the ability to translate something that is abstract into concrete. Place.MAKING exhibition is the second opened exhibition that is held outside UPH, consists of 2 exhibitions that are arranged naratively about how UPH?s architecture study demonstrates that understanding. The first exhibition was held in 2009 at Mall Grand Indonesia, as a part of Jakarta Architeture Triennalle. This second exhibition also aims to show the development of learning process at Architecture major itself.

This exhibition will be held for 2 weeks, starts from Saturday, July 7 2012 until Sunday, July 22 2012 at Dia.lo.gue Artspace, Jln. Kemang Selatan 99A, Jakarta. ?Place? exhibition will open the event and will be continued with the ?Making? exhibition on the second week simultanously. Not only exhibition, place.MAKING will also provide interesting discussion and seminar about architecture, for instance seminar with Bian Poen as the speaker and discussion with Head of Bapeda and the Regent of Kepulauan Seribu.
