Cooperating with the Health Department, Universitas Pelita Harapan (UPH) gave training to counseling teachers from 20 high schools in Tangerang, Jakarta, and Bogor as a part of ?Stay Away Campaign? program. ?Stay Away Campaign? is a reminder for young Indonesians to stay free from drugs, free sex, and cigarettes.
The training held on April 29th until May 1st 2009 involving school counseling teachers from SMA Kristen I Penabur Jakarta, SMA Vianney, SMA Kristen 5 Penabur Jakarta, SMA 70 Jakarta, Fons Vitae 1 Marsudirni, SMAK 7 Penabur, Tarsisius 1, SMAK Kalam Kudus II dan III, SMA Notre Dame, SMA Mahatma Gading, SMA Ketapang II, and many other schools.
For three days, those school counseling teachers were given useful information such as introduction to genders, the development of teens, communication and counseling methods, teenagers? reproduction health, the dangers of drugs and cigarette, and a lot more by a number of counseling experts from the ministry.
One of the experts, Fadhlina, stated that it is important to involve school counseling teachers all around Indonesia in this training, due to the fact that tendency of young Indonesians to taste drugs, free sex, and cigarettes keeps increasing.
?To enhance the benefits, this training should reach places in Indonesia thoroughly. The facts indicate that teenagers now dominate Indonesia?s population by 20 percent,? she said.
Meanwhile, another student counseling expert, Heri, added that bottom-up communication mechanism between the counseling teachers and their students is needed. ?All this time, the relationship between the counseling teacher and the student has always been top to bottom. It needs refreshment, students long to be heard,? he stated.
Heri and Fadhlina agree that there are a lot of things should be renewed in providing counseling facilities for students, such as private counseling rooms, students? counseling community, parents? meeting to discuss the danger of drugs, cigarettes, and free sex, and many more.?
The participants admitted that this training is beneficial in giving them new detailed information that are significant to be practiced. One counseling teacher from Ketapang II, Devi Gustina, said that this training helps renew her knowledge.
