Due to concerns for children and adolescents who currently don’t sing much or not even knowing songs that are appropriate for them in their age, UPH’s Conservatory of Music (CoM) held a Children’s and Youth Songwriting Festival with the theme Share The Life? on Nov 18th ? Dec 2nd, 2018, featuring the 10 best works at the Shine Like Stars Grand Concert, which is the peak of the event on December 2nd at UPH’s Grand Chapel in Lippo Village Campus.
“Through the Share The Life theme, we hope that we can bring back children and teenagers to sing songs according to their age. So they don’t sing more songs that are popular in the community that aren’t even suitable or appropriate for their age. This is the reason why we hold song festivals that are educational to inspire children and young people,” Antonius Sugeng Priyanto, the dean of UPH’s CoM, explained.
In addition, Yosia Revie Pongoh, the academic event coordinator, explained that with the Share The Light theme, participants from among high school students throughout Jabodetabek are invited to write motivational songs with themes such as friendship, sportsmanship, love for the homeland, etc.
Revie also explained that this festival is not a competition; but rather, it is intended to attract contestants’ participation in writing songs. The 10 superior contestants had the opportunity to collaborate with UPM CoM at the ‘Shine Like Stars’ concert.
“In this grand concert, 10 performers collaborated with UPH’s Symphony Orchestra, UPH’s Broadway Ensemble, UPH’s Concert Choir, and UPH’s VoxCom. Overall, there are 450 performers in this grand concert. The participants who became the audience’s favorite were participants from Athalia High School from Alam Sutera, Lentera Harapan High School from Curug, Tunas Bangsa High School from Serpong, and College High School from Cikini. Beside performing at this concert, the best contestant will enter the recording studio to produce the song professionally,” Revie explained.
Surely in determining the best work, it involves the judges with the judgement criteria that had been set. The judges who were trusted to judge the song’s copyrighted works were UPM CoM lecturers, including Antonius S. Priyanto, M.Mus., Yosia Revie Pongoh, M.A., Dr. Henry S. Pranoto, with songwriting assessment criteria (melody, harmony, lyrics, style, etc.) and the presentation of the song.
By looking at the great enthusiasm for this festival, according to Antonius, UPH CoM will again hold a similar event each year with a wider audience to enable individuals to have the media for channeling their talents. (mt)
